Get your AWS bill out as a file in two minutes.

Billtrim reads a Cost Explorer CSV or a Cost and Usage Report (CUR) CSV. Pick the one that fits. Both are read in your browser; only a compact summary of totals is sent.

Option 1: Cost Explorer CSV (fastest)

Best for a first look. Works with any AWS account that can open Cost Explorer.

  1. Open the AWS console, search for Cost Explorer and open it. If it asks you to enable it, enable it; data fills in within 24 hours.
  2. Set the date range to the last full month, or up to 13 months back. Set Granularity to Daily so Billtrim can find spikes.
  3. Under Group by, choose Usage type. This is the setting that matters: usage types are what name NAT Gateway bytes, idle load balancer hours and gp2 volumes.
  4. Click Download CSV (top right of the chart). Keep the file as downloaded.
  5. Drop it on the Billtrim start page.

Grouping by Service instead still works, with fewer findings, because services are broader than usage types.

Option 2: Cost and Usage Report (most detail)

Best for the deepest findings: resource IDs show which NAT gateway or which volume is the cost. Needs permission to create a report in the Billing console.

  1. Open Billing and Cost Management, then Data Exports and choose Create.
  2. Choose the Legacy CUR export type. Name it, tick Include resource IDs, and set time granularity to Daily.
  3. Set the report data compression to GZIP and the format to text/csv. Avoid the Parquet option (Athena integration): Billtrim reads CSV.
  4. Choose an S3 bucket and prefix and save. AWS delivers the first report within 24 hours.
  5. Download the .csv.gz file or files for the month from the bucket. A month can arrive in several parts; drop all the parts together.

What Billtrim accepts

  • Cost Explorer CSV, monthly or daily, grouped by service, usage type, region or linked account
  • CUR CSV and .csv.gz, including multi-part months, files of 300,000 rows and more

Parquet files and .zip archives are not read: re-export as CSV using the steps above, or unzip first.
